If you have pending traffic challans in Delhi, a Lok Adalat (“people’s court”) is often the fastest and cheapest way to clear them. These special sittings are held periodically to settle disputes amicably, including notice-based traffic challans.
What is a Lok Adalat?
A Lok Adalat is a statutory forum that settles cases through compromise rather than litigation. National Lok Adalats are held on scheduled dates through the year, and traffic challans (particularly court-notice challans) are commonly resolved there — frequently at a reduced settlement amount, at the presiding officer’s discretion.
How the process works
- Get a token / notice. For eligible challans, Delhi Traffic Police issue a notice or you obtain a token for the Lok Adalat date, typically via the traffic-police portal or SMS.
- Note your date and venue. Sittings are held at designated court complexes across the districts.
- Attend on the date. Present your challan details; the matter is taken up and, if settled, you pay the agreed amount on the spot and get a receipt.
How to prepare
- Know your challans first. Enter your Delhi (DL) registration number in the MyRTO app to list pending challans before the date.
- Carry your RC, licence, insurance and the notice/token.
- Reach early — these sittings can be busy.
Points to remember
- Lok Adalat settlements are final and binding; there’s no appeal against the agreed amount.
- Not every challan is eligible; some can be paid directly online instead.
- Dates are announced periodically — check the Delhi State Legal Services Authority / traffic-police announcements for the next National Lok Adalat.
